Lot Essay

The throne made of a rug over a double-layered cushion was reserved to the high rank lamas. See a Chinese, 17th/18th century, lacquer figure of a lama, seated on similar double-layered cushion and wearing the Gelugpa hat, illustrated in Tibetan Collection - Volumme III: Sculpture and Painting, The Newark Museum, New Jersey 1986, p.113, pl.S39.
