Lot Essay
Qianlong Emperor promoted the manufacture of such monumental cloisonné for the Palace. They are usually rarely marked.
Compare the present lot with another large cloisonné censer, from the Uldry Collection, published in H. Brinker and A. Lutz, Chinesisches Cloisonné - Die Sammlung Pierre Uldry, Museum Rietberg, Zurich 1985, pl.323. This piece is clearly related to the present lot although they are not alike. The Uldry censer is supported on the backs of three cranes but looking backward and both the body and the handles are made of cloisonné with deers and cranes motifs on a landscape.
A censer, identical to the Uldry one, was offered in these Rooms, 22 November 2005, lot 131.
See another more similar vessel, supported by cranes, the globular body decorated with birds and aquatic plants, the handles and finial made of gilt-bronze, modelled as dragons, sold at Sotheby's New York, 19 March 1997, lot 155.
