Lot Essay

May Morris was the younger daughter of artist and designer William Morris and his wife Jane Burden Morris. She was an influential embroideress and designer in her own right. This rare copy of her 1893 work serves as a technical guide and also as illustration of the Morris aesthetic for creativity and freehand work, in stark opposition to the by-the-numbers embroideries that were predominant in the 19th century.
