Lot Essay

The aniline dyes available from 1857 allowed for previously impossible shads of vivid purples, exemplified by this elaborate and eye-catching example of fashionable dress. The changeover from the enormous round skirts of the 1860s to the more structured shapes of the 1870s is captured perfectly here.
