Lot Essay

Jan Looten was born in Amsterdam, but had settled in London by July 1662. He was renowned as a painter of landscapes, employing an earthy tonality and working on a grand scale. Looten is known to have collaborated with Nicolaes Bercham, who often executed the staffage in Looten's landscapes.
