Lot Essay

The sitter was the daughter of Robert Sidney, 2nd Earl of Leicester. She married Sir John Pelham, 3rd Bt. of Halland, in 1647. She was also painted by Sir Peter Lely, in the Collection of the Earl of Yarborough, exhibited in the Lely Exhibition at the National Portrait Gallery, 1978, no.9. See lot 121 for a portrait of her son, Thomas Pelham of Laughton, 1st Bt.
