Lot Essay

Perhaps studies for figures in many of Vernet's paintings of French sea ports. These drawings probably formed part of one of Claude-Joseph Vernet's numerous sketchbooks of which several remain intact in the Bibliothèque d'Art et d'Archéologie and the Louvre, Paris.
