The crossbanded shaped rectangular and crimson-red leather-lined top above three panelled frieze drawers with foliate-cast handles, the reverse with simulated drawers, the angles with foliate mounts, on cabriole legs terminating in foliate sabots, stamped 'I.C. ELLAUME', 'JME' and 'CAREL' and twice 'JME', the locks replaced, probably in England in the 19th century

Jacques-Philippe Carel, maître in 1723.

This elegant bureau plat features the stamps of both Ellaume and Carel, but which of these acted as ébéniste and as marchand, as both are known to have stamped thier work in either capacity. They received commissions from marchands-merciers and fellow ébénistes alike, Léonard Boudin, Jean-Baptiste Fromageau and Adrien Fleury who were among those with whom Ellaume collaborated, and their stamps have been found alongside Ellaume's on various pieces. Among those having worked with Carel, the ébéniste Denis Genty, maître in 1754, whose stamp was affixed alongside Carel's on certain pieces.
