The intricate carving of this magnificent console table, especially the fantastic grotesque masks heading the square-sectioned inverted baluster legs, ties it to both Roman and Florentine examples. Similar masks can be found on striking giltwood tables made in Rome in the 1730s and '40s (see E. Colle, Il Mobile Barocco in Italia, Milan, 2000, cat. 29, pp. 128-131), however, such intricately-carved masks can also be found on early 18th century Florentine tables (ibid, cat. 46-47, pp. 192-195).
