Lot Essay

Pierre Durand, maître-horloger in 1777.

This charming clock features a classically-draped allegorical figure of Astronomy (or Uranie) and a putto emblematic of Geography. This allegorical model of clock is recurrent in late 18th Century French pendules and can be found on related clocks illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française du Moyen-âge au XXe Siècle, Paris, 1997, p 244, figs D and E, and p. 264, figs. A and B).
