Lot Essay

Of quintessentially neoclassical design, this clock is closely-related to an example featuring virtually-identical rams' heads to the classical urn finial, which is in the Musée du Louvre, Paris (ill. E. Dumonthier, Les Bronzes du Mobilier National, Pendules et Cartels, Paris). A further closely-related cartel clock by Lacan, with urn finial, laurel swags and with foliate-cast boss, is illustrated in P. Kjellberg, Encyclopédie de la Pendule Française du Moyen-âge au XXe Siècle, Paris, 1997, p 190, fig C.

Henri Lacan was received as maître-horloger in 1756. Elected Juré in 1766, he established his atelier in the rue du Bourg l'Abbé in 1770. Lacan worked with fondeurs Leligois, Gérard and Thomire père amongst others.
