By tradition the gold nugget forming the centrepiece of this unusual ring was found in two by Allen McMartin and Jack Anderson in a river in Uganda during the early 1930s. The nuggets were subsequently fused together, the junction cleverly hidden by a single-cut diamond 'vein'. Although months were later spent in search for the original source in the hope for of finding more nuggets, it was never found. McMartin and Alderson were to establish McAlder Mines in Kenya, which was sold to the British government at the outbreak of the Second World War.
