The so-called cat's eye effect caused by many needle-like inclusions arranged parallel to each other occurs in a few gem materials such as sapphires and quartz, but only in chrysoberyl may it be called cat's eye without any further qualification as the colour and quality are in chrysoberyl are considered the 'true cat's eye'.
