Lot Essay

Ernest Henry Griset (1844-1907), a Belgium artist living in London, produced comical drawings of animals that he studied at London Zoo, frequently giving them human characteristics. Many of these designs formed the basis of his illustrations for children's books; in particular the revised version of Aesop's Fables, from which a similar bird appears in The Peacock and the Magpie story.
