Lot Essay

Lange de Bourbon (d. 1772) was awarded the title of Machiniste-Faiseur de Baromètre du Roi before 1757.

A related giltwood barometer carved with a similar ducal crown and inscribed 'Lange de Bourbon faiseur de baromètres du roy', from the collection Decourcelle, sold Paris, 29-30 May 1911, lot 226, is now conserved in the Nissim de Camondo Museum, in the Passage au salon des Huet, described in the Catalogue, Paris, 1973, p. 41, n. 180.

Further barometers by Lange de Bourbon in important collections include an example in the Linsky Collection at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York (illustrated in The Jack and Belle Linsky Collection in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1984, n. 149) and one in the Kress Collection at the Metropolitan Museum Art (illustrated in C.C. Dauterman, J. Parker and E.A. Standen, Complete Catalogue of the Samuel H. Kress Collection: Decorative Art, 1964, pp. 272-273, figs. 229-230).
