Lot Essay

Most Chinese and Japanese cabinets made for export to Europe were decorated in gold on a black ground and only exceptionally the wooden ground was left bare, showing the pattern of the grain. This technique was used here to allow the beautiful satin-like ripple effect of the hardwood construction to show through. In beautiful contrast to the architectural outlines of the cabinet the cabriole-supported stand, vigorously carved with rocaille, C-scrolls, birds and plants, exemplifies the mid-18th century rococo style.
