A VICTORIAN SILVER-GILT AND GEM-SET MONSTRANCE
MARK OF THOMAS THOMASON & CO., BIRMINGHAM, 1884
The rising circular base set with a shell cameo of Christ wearing the crown of thorns; a 1st AFGHAN WAR medal "Cabul 1842"; and a SUTLEJ CAMPAIGN medal for SOBRAON (1846), the traditional 'sunburst' applied with a red enamel, diamond and pearl-set cross with inverted teardrop-shaped garnet with a diamond set at either end, the centre luna compartment edged with pearl-set trefoils, below which is the Chi-rho monogram formed in pearls, set into a Jasper background, below which is a micro-mosaic cross, 27½in. (70cm.) high. The base is fitted with a removeable disc plate engraved with a latin inscription (see condition report for text).
