A PAIR OF MEISSEN CIRCULAR BOWLS, COVERS AND STANDS
CIRCA 1728, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARKS TO BOWLS AND STANDS, ENCLOSED BY DOUBLE CONCENTRIC CIRCLES ON THE BOWLS
Painted by J.E. Stadler with Oriental figures at discussion holding parasols and fans among pine trees and indianische Blumen, the lower part of the bowls with an underglaze blue diaper border reserved with four panels of insects flanked by foliage, the stands similarly decorated with a band of foliage and half flowerheads to the wells and indianische Blumen and rockwork to the borders between double blue line bands, the shallow domed covers with radiating moulded lotus petals in iron-red, green and underglaze blue with brown stalk finials flanked by applied pine and a spotted rodent (one bowl with short firing crack to rim, one cover with small rim chip and an associated extended firing crack, the other with a small extended firing crack and both with firing cracks to flanges)
The stands approximately 10 5/8 in. (27 cm.) diam.

All of the figures on the present bowls, covers and stands are derived from the engraved source 'Nieuwe geinventeerde Sineesen' published by Petrus Schenk the Younger in Amsterdam, 1702. A. L. den Blaauwen, in his article 'Keramik mit chinoiserien nach Stichen von Petrus Schenk jun.', Keramos, no. 31 (1966), pp. 3-18 reproduces thirty-six prints by Schenk from a set in the Kupferstichkabinett, Dresden. The scenes on these bowls are taken from plate nos. 2, 9, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 23. The present lot would seem to be the only instance of such an extensive use of this series of prints at Meissen.
