All of the figures on the present bowls, covers and stands are derived from the engraved source 'Nieuwe geinventeerde Sineesen' published by Petrus Schenk the Younger in Amsterdam, 1702. A. L. den Blaauwen, in his article 'Keramik mit chinoiserien nach Stichen von Petrus Schenk jun.', Keramos, no. 31 (1966), pp. 3-18 reproduces thirty-six prints by Schenk from a set in the Kupferstichkabinett, Dresden. The scenes on these bowls are taken from plate nos. 2, 9, 11, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19, 21 and 23. The present lot would seem to be the only instance of such an extensive use of this series of prints at Meissen.

For a vase with related chinoiserie decoration by Stadler, see Ulrich Pietsch, Johann Gregorious Höroldt 1696-1775 Porzellansammlung Zwinger, Dresden, Exhibition Catalogue (1996), pp. 206-207. For a smaller covered bowl of similar form also decorated in underglaze blue and indianische Blumen, see Rainer Rückert, Meissner Porzellan, 1710-1810 (Munich, 1966) no. 267.
