CIRCA 1740, BLUE CROSSED SWORDS MARK, PRESSNUMMER 16
Painted in the manner of Adam Friedrich von Löwenfinck with a grey Kaitsu seated on its haunches and surrounded by butterflies and insects and Purpurmalerei sprays of stylised flowers, within a stepped shaped rim (some very slight scratches)

This plate was almost certainly part of the large service sold in these Rooms on 2nd October 1979, lots 175-213.

The beast, traditionally referred to as a kylin, is in fact a direct copy of a Japanese chimaere, or Kaitsu on a Japanese original. A similar plate is illustrated in Meissener Porzellan des 18. Jahrhunderts aus Bad Pyrmonter Privatbesitz Museum im Schloss Bad Pyrmont November 2002 - January 2003 Exhibition Catalogue (2002), p. 85, and another is illustrated by D. Hoffmeister, Katalog der Sammlung Hoffmeister (Hamburg, 1999), Vol. I, no. 186. Another example from the Dr. Sali Guggenheim Collection was sold by Christie's Geneva on 15th May 1995, lot 76.
