Lot Essay

The rooms depicted are those of the 2nd Baron Stanmore. Grandson of the 4th Earl of Aberdeen, Prime Minister from 1852 and 1855, Stanmore was Government Whip from 1914 to 1922, and Chief Liberal Whip in the House of Lords from 1923 until 1944. The title became extinct on his death in 1957.
