Lot Essay

The parlour chairs, designed in early 19th century Antique-Grecian fashion, display bas-reliefs in evocation of lyric poetry and the sun-deity Apollo's Mt. Parnassus triumph in leading the Muses of artistic inspiration. His sacred sunflowers decorate the palm-flowered columnar legs, while the 'tablet' backs, bearing the zodiac emblems in lozenged compartments are centred by his sun-rayed and laurel-wreathed medallions. The general form relates to a pattern of 1804 published in Sammlung von Zeichnungen der neuesten Londner und Pariser Meubles als Muster f/uur Tischler, Leipzig, 1804.
