Lot Essay

The curvaceous lines of this attractive tea-canister are characteristic of the work of Liege in the mid-18th Century, with its serpentine outline, cabochons and sculpted rocaille ornaments, and brass hinges engraved with floral sprays. It is interesting to note that a related Liege oak casket dated 1761 and featuring comparable rocaille clasps, boldly-carved angle volutes and engraved brass hinges, was sold, from the Edward James Collection, West Dean Park, Christie's, London, 15 March 1990, lot 104.
