Emilio Santarelli (1801-1886) worked under Thorvaldson in Rome for some time before returning to his native Florence to continue in the workshop of his father Giovanni Antonio Santarelli (1758-1826).
Well known for his busts and figures of historical subject matter, his life-size statue of Michelangelo is in the Uffizi. Santarelli also drew inspiration from classical subjects as in the present pair of busts depicting the lyrical poets Corinna and Orfeo.
