William Bowyer is believed to have been making clocks as early as the 1620s and was a member of the Clockmakers' Company by 1632. He was Assistant in 1651 and Warden in 1653, when he last attended. He probably died around then and certainly by 1662/63. See Brian Loomes, The Early Clockmakers of Great Britain, Southwick, 1981, pp.108-109. Bruce (p.14) describes Bowyer as 'probably the finest maker of lantern clocks in London up to the Civil War' and refers to him continuing to work through the civil war. Unusually for Bowyer, this example is signed along the edge of the front fret rather than at the bottom of the dial, as is an example shown in Bruce (p.15).
