The door with moulded breakarch cresting centred by a later turned vase finial, with spiral-twist half columns above a moulded plinth and resting on two ball feet, opening on concealed hinges via integral side-positioned catch operated with the winding key, the case with glazed side panels within moulded frames and supported by three further feet, the inside rear panel inlaid with an olivewood parquetry star, the upper rear with brass hanging loops, the dial opening on hinges and with velvet-covered brass plate, gilt-brass skeletonised Roman chapter ring with outer minutes, pierced and engraved hands, central alarm-setting disc, decorative brass collet to the winding square, applied with a skeletonised signature plaque below Johannes Tegelbergh Hagae, the thirty-hour movement with rectangular plates joined by four ringed vase-shaped back-pinned pillars, single barrel, three spoke wheelwork, verge escapement with silk suspension and cycloidal cheeks, pierced and engraved two-piece backcock, countwheel hour strike on later bell above the case, with separate alarm movement mounted to the side of the case and sounding on the hour bell; pendulum

A clock by Tegelbergh of related design was sold in the Prestige Collection, Sotheby & Co., London, Important English and Continental Bracket and Longcase Clocks, 28 October 1963, lot 126.

Johannes Tegelbergh (1648-1729) was born in Dordrecht and became a citizen of the Hague in 1670. In 1688 he was one of the founders of the Clockmakers Guild in the Hague, later acting as a Warden and Master.
