The breakarch case applied with an acanthus carving to the lunette, the sides with silk-backed foliate carved high relief frets, the rear of the arch also silk-backed, the spring-released front door with breakfront top and bottom mouldings, on bun feet, the 21.5 cm. (8½ in.) square brass dial with engraved border and winged cherub mask spandrels, alarm winding square by top right spandrel, silvered Roman and Arabic chapter ring, with sword-hilt half hour markers and signed J.V Brussel Amsterdam matted centre wih ringed winding holes and with engraving around the date aperture, silvered alarm setting disc, pierced and black painted hands, the long duration movement with rectangular plates joined by five ringed and tapering pillars, twin line fusees and reinstated verge escapement, inside rack for Dutch strike on two bells and trip repeat, possibly restored alarm work positioned on the back plate, with pierced and engraved later apron, the back plate engraved with foliate scrolls around a signature oval for J V Brussel/Amsterdam

Johannes van Brussel (1677-1753) was born in Amsterdam and married in that city in 1701; his workshop was in the Regulierdwarsstraat.
