Absalom Miner was born in Guilford, Connecticut on July 23, 1771, the son of Absalom and Ruth Morse Miner. In 1797, he married Mary Gorton; by the time the first of their ten children was born in 1798, he had moved his wife and other members of his family to New York State. Absalom and his family were among the early settlers of the town of Brookfield in Madison County, on the border of Chenango County. The desk remained in the family and in Madison County until it was purchased by Robert Palmiter in 1956.
