Lot Essay

This drawing dates from Vincent's stay in Italy between 1771 and 1775 when he was pensionnaire at the Académie de France in Rome then located in the Palazzo Mancini. Vincent specialized making caricatures of his fellow pensionnaires, and comparable drawings often annotated with the name of the model are in Rouen (French Master Drawings from the Rouen Museum From Caron to Delacroix, Washington, National Gallery of Art and elsewhere, 1981, no. 119, pl. 82), Dijon and Montpellier (Petits et grands Mâitres du Musée Atger. Cent dessins français des 17eme et 18eme siècles, 1996, no. 28).
