Lot Essay

Most likely sketched on site during the artist's second trip to Italy 1773-74. A comparable grouping of cypresses with a fence and a statue on a pedestal can be seen in a fully developed wash drawing from the same period entitled Roman park with cypresses in the Albertina, Vienna (inv. 12737); (A. Ananoff, op. cit. p. 105, no. 2216, fig. 583).
We are grateful to Eunice Williams for her assistance in cataloguing this lot.
