Based on an engraving after Liotard by Joseph Cameratta entitled Une dame franque de Pera à Constantinople recevant visite. The inscription on the print notes that the faces were engraved by Liotard, while the figures were executed by Cameratta (see R. Loche and M. Rothlisberger, L'Opera completa di Liotard, Milan 1978, p.93). Liotard made a series of red and black chalk drawings of Europeans in Turkish costume while in Constantinople from 1738 to 1742.
The engraving was made after a drawing executed in 1740-42 now in Geneva, Musée d'art et d'histoire (Inv. 1931-6; Dessins de Liotard, exhib. cat. Geneva, Musée d'art et d'histoire and Paris, Musée du Louvre, 1992, no. 42) of which there is a reworked couterproof in the Louvre (RF 1392, identified as The Empress Maria Theresa of Austria and her daughter); (Geneva exhib. cat., op. cit., no. 43).
