The present drawing and the two following lots are rare drawings by Johann Christian Dahl executed during the artist's stay in Copenhagen between 1811 and 1818 while he was attending the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. As the inscriptions verso indicate, they all represent members from the family of one of the artist's friends, the actor and writer Jens Stephan Heger (1769-1865), their first owner. They remained in his family until recently. One of the drawings, part of lot 168, is dated January 1818 and the others were probably produced at about the same time.
Jens Heger is shown seated behind an artist standing in front of an easel on which is a portrait of a seated woman. Although Dahl specialized in landscape early on and portraits by him are rare, it is tempting to identify him with the young painter represented here.
