Of fluted and panelled urn form on shaped oval base, the removable cover with urn finial, the body with bright-cut tassel and garland engraving, both sides engraved with script monogram LG, the foot and cover also with bright-cut engraving, the underside of base engraved circa 1923 with family provenance, apparently unmarked

Inscription on base: Louisa May (1778-1832) who married (1793) Benjamin Goddard (1766-1861) To Eleanor Goddard May 1916 to Frederick May Eliot and Elizabeth Lee Eliot, 1923

The engraving on this sugar urn, with its five-stroke tassels suspending from tightly-entwined cords, is virtually identical to that on a cream-jug marked by Thomas Revere, Jr., nephew of Paul Revere (illustrated in Kathryn Buhler, American Silver in the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston,, p. 480, fig. 429).
