Despite his leg trouble and the muddy track, High Echelon won this particular Belmont Stakes. Personality was expected to run instead of High Echelon, but John Jacobs scratched him the Friday before the race due to a coughing fit that was seen as a risk. Despite his leg trouble and the muddy track, High Echelon won the Belmont Stakes by three-quarters of a length on jockey Johnny Rotz, with horses Needles N Pens, Naskra and Climber not far behind.
