Circular, on four reeded bracket feet, the field chased with five laurel wreaths, three with thoroughbreds within, above each horse the name Eclipse 1764, Herod 1758, Matchem 1748, the central wreath The Belmont 1970, the lower wreath Ethel D. Jacobs, High Echelon, the reverse engraved with the past winners of The Belmont, marked on reverse

Lot Essay

Despite his leg trouble and the muddy track, High Echelon won this particular Belmont Stakes. Personality was expected to run instead of High Echelon, but John Jacobs scratched him the Friday before the race due to a coughing fit that was seen as a risk. Despite his leg trouble and the muddy track, High Echelon won the Belmont Stakes by three-quarters of a length on jockey Johnny Rotz, with horses Needles N Pens, Naskra and Climber not far behind. The victory of High Echelon was seen as a tribute to Hirsch Jacobs, who died that year, prior to the race. The Chronicle Telegram, June 7, 1970.
