Lot Essay

In 1950, Bearden sailed to Paris with letters of introduction to art world luminaries including Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse. Deeply inspired by the Jazz series and other cut outs Matisse fabricated from the 1930s through the early 1950s, Bearden created his own paper collages in the years that followed.
