By family tradition these planters were made for Ebenezer Hazard of Philadelphia (1744-1817), one of America's first Postmasters General (1782-1789) succeeding Benjamin Franklin and his son-in-law. He married Abigail Arthur (the monogram for Ebenezer and Abigail Hazard) and they made homes in New York and later Philadelphia; he became a noted historian of the young republic. One planter bears an old paper label inscribed Hazard in sepia ink.
