Of pear shape, finely enamelled front and back with a European gentleman and lady in a garden attended by a young boy, a dog by his master's feet on one side, within garlands of stylized lotus, the rims with colorful cell-patterned bands, the handle and spout issuing from gilt open-mouthed dragons, the domed cover with Buddhistic lion finial

This jug and the previous lot both from a small group of high quality Yongzheng period wares that display this unusual combination of Chinese and European taste. It is likely the jug in the Martin-Hurst collection that was illustrated by G. C. Williamson, The Book of Famille Rose, London, 1927, pl. XXVI. A very similar, but smaller jug in the Chinese Pavillion in Brussels is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, p. 68. Another, once in the Garland Collection, the Pierpont Morgan Collection and the Hervouët Collection, was sold Christie's London, 11 May 2004, lot 69. Compare also the related cylindrical pot in the Hodroff collection illustrated on the cover of Choice of the Private Trader (D.S. Howard), and p. 155; and a very similar pot, again from the Martin Hurst collection, illustrated by Williamson, op. cit., pl. XXIV.
