Lot Essay

This shape was probably inspired by an archaic bronze fang lei, but is rarely found in porcelain. A very similar vase in the collection of the Rijksmuseum is illustrated by Jörg, op. cit. p. 163, no. 178. Another example is in the Victoria and Albert Museum, Salting Collection, no.1033-1910. Compare also the yellow-glazed monochrome vase of this form illustrated by J. Ayers, The Baur Collection, Geneva, Chinese Ceramics, vol. III, no. A447.
