The center with the arms of Clifford, the border with peony, a still-life of auspicious objects, and the wyvern crest between bands of foliate scrollwork, the reverse with finely drawn iron-red and gilt butterflies

Lot Essay

The present example represents the earliest of three services with these arms, probably for Hugh, 4th Baron Clifford of Chudleigh, who married Lady Anne Lee, daughter of the Earl of Lichfield. See D.S. Howard, Chinese Armorial Porcelain, op. cit., p. 298.
