Lot Essay

D.F. Lunsingh Scheurleer, Chinese Export Porcelain, illustrates the engraving by Petrus Schenk (1660-1718) that this decoration is based on (pl. 253). Howard & Ayers, op. cit., point out that the Schenk work follows closely the Wissing portrait of John Cecil, Lord Burghley, while also noting that the identity of de Wolff remains a mystery.
