Lot Essay

Various members of the influential Valckenier family were involved with the Dutch East India Company and ordered armorial porcelain, the leading family member being Adriaan Valckenier, Governor-General of the Indies 1737-41. See C.J.A. Jorg, op. cit., p. 303, where the author illustrates a plate in the Rijksmuseum from another famous Valckenier service decorated en grisaille around the rim with three scenes of European towns.
