Lot Essay

This scene is taken from a painting by Johan Elias Ridinger. Ridinger made several engravings after the painting, one of which was probably sent to China to be copied for this service. A very similar plate from the Mottahedeh Collection is illustrated by Howard and Ayers, op. cit., vol.I, no. 278, p. 280. A chocolate pot with this design, but perhaps from a different service, is illustrated by Hervouët and Bruneau, op. cit., p.78, fig.3.34. Also compare The Dr. Anton C.R. Dreesmann Collection, Christie's, New York, 10 April 2002, lots 482 and 483.
