Lot Essay

Théodore Gérard is known for his engravings and genre scenes. When settling in Brussels in 1863, he taught at the Academy of Fine Arts. He was a successful artist, winning medals at exhibitions in Philadelphia (1870), London (1871), Vienna (1873) and Brussels (1875).
The present lot is typical of Gérard's work in its depiction of contemporary figures at leisure in a near-idyllic landscape. Public collections that include similar pictures are the Brussels Museum, the Ghent Museum, the Courtrai Museum and the Antwerp Museum.
