Lot Essay

The artist lived in Rome from 1660-1665, where he was a member of the so-called 'Bentveughels'. In Italy he developed the subject matter that became his speciality: the Mediterranean coastal landscape. Typical are towers and promontories in the foreground and the clouds with reflections in the sea.
