Christ on the way to Emmaus

Three other pictures dated 1609 are recorded in the R.K.D.: Bayerische Staatsgemäldesammlungen, Munich, inv.no.2021; Staatliche Kunsthalle, Karlsruhe, inv.no.2125 and Fondation Custodia, Paris. These are among the earliest dated works by the artist, whose style marks a transition between the Flemish and Dutch landscape painting ca. 1630. Little is known about Hondecoeter's apprenticeship, but in his earliest paintings Gillis van Coninxloo's influence is apparent as is evident from a comparison with a print after a landscape by Coninxloo (H.G. Franz, Niederländische Landschaftsmalerei, II, 1969, fig.413).
