In a personal letter to Mrs. Goddard, Munnings describes how "It was a perfect morning in late October when I painted it in 1939". The autumnal trees are most likely those in Munnings' own garden in the grounds of Castle House, Dedham, Essex.
Munnings bought Castle House in 1919 - 'the house of [his] dreams' where he lived until his death in 1959.
The work is sold along with two personal letters from Sir Alfred Munnings addressed to Mrs.D.B.R.Goddard, and the exhibition catalogue for the 1947 Royal Academy Summer Exhibition.
