Lot Essay

Shelves such as the present example were typically produced in order to display objets précieux or objets de luxe, as illustrated by the numerous 18th Century paintings depicting comparable examples, and inspired by the still-life, circa 1725, in the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris (illustrated in Steinitz Antiquaires, Paris, 2006, p. 222).
A related gilt and red-japanned hanging shelf was sold, 'Le Goçut Steinitz II', Christies, Paris, 14 November 2007, lot 140 (£18,250 EUR).
