Lot Essay

A tapestry of nearly identical design but with a central roundel depicting Samson and the lion inset between the two figures of Victory, is in the Burrell Collection, Glasgow Museums of Art Galleries (C. Adelson, European Tapestry in the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Minneapolis, 1994, p. 370, fig. 156), while another from the Gutmann collection was sold at Christie's, Amsterdam, 13 May 2003, lot 32.
