Each with a circular moulded back plate, decorated with scrolling foliage and issuing a bust-length figure of a masked clown and a liveried servant respectively, each holding in one hand a lobed torch, with moulded glass candle-branches hung with glass collars and flower heads

Lot Essay

These two characters could possibly be from the Commedia dell'arte, a popular form of improvisational theatre that began in Italy in the 15th century and maintained its popularity through to the 18th century. However, their costumes do not specifically relate to any of the well-known cast of characters.
