OF GEORGE III STYLE, LATE 19TH/EARLY 20TH CENTURY
Each with overhanging dentilled cornice and cavetto-moulded frieze above a pair of glazed doors enclosing a cream silk-lined interior with four shelves to each side, on blind fretwork-carved square legs with pierced fretwork brackets and block feet, wired for electricity, lacking one glass pane, four panes cracked

Lot Essay

Doris Merrill Magowan, daughter of Charles E. Merill, founder of Merrill Lynch and married to Robert Anderson Magowan, throughout her life owned several houses and apartments in New York, San Francisco, Southampton and Palm Beach. Thanks to her highly-educated eye and appreciation of the Decorative Arts, she was able to furnish these palaces to great effect. An aficionado of fairs such as the annual Grosvenor House Antiques Fair, she could not resist buying something for one of her houses and would often scour the Trade advertisement pages of Apollo and Connoisseur. Her collection was sold at Christie's New York, 22 May 2002.
