Lot Essay

Two butler's trays of nearly identical design were probably supplied to William, 5th Earl of Dumfries by Thomas Chippendale for Dumfries House, Ayrshire. They are likely to be those recorded in Chippendale's 1763 bill as one of '2 large mahogany Butler's Trays, £1.3'.
